Perth is still sinking …

When I first saw the article that sea levels were soaring in Perth, my first thought was, “that’s so dumb”. So I suggested they look at the coastal plain which was actually sinking.

Pumping groundwater has caused many cities around the world to subside, suggest as in the Mediterranium and the East Coast of the US.

Finally, the news cycle catches up, Warwick Hughes explains it all:

December 12th, 2012 by Warwick Hughes Recent media publicity around a “State of Australian Cities” report has beaten up claims that Perth sea-levels are rising at three times the global average, or near 10mm per year. A matter that Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese described as “disturbing and extraordinary”. Chris Gillham shows that the claims in the State of Australian Cities report re Perth sea level rise are over-hyped.
